Assessing microbial water quality in ballast water around the world

The spread of invasive species via ships’ ballast water is a global concern and this has prompted the need for assessing microbial water quality in ballast water. Ballast water collected from the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach and Singapore (in collaboration with National University of Singapore) is investigated for occurrence of pathogens and for the diversity and structure of virus communities using metagenomic approaches.
